NEW stuff
2/14/06 update:
Jeb's ride report.
End of NEW stuff
We picked up another sponsor, Anti-Monkey Butt Powder again this year. Thanks
John!! I appreciate it. Now if Jack remembers to actually bring the stuff from
MN this year, we should have a good give-a-way. :-)
Looks like it's going to be quite the feed on Saturday. Patrick Hollier and
Chris Blanco are both bringing batches of gumbo and Girard Lall is doing the
fish fry thing. With Deb's chili on Friday, it should be a well fed Wudi crowd
this year!
For those going to Brock Creek, make sure you print out the maps I put on the
driving directions page and we'll have to get into particulars at Train Robbers.
Jonathon Wright was up there last weekend and hung some arrows. Here is his
update:
****************************************************
Yep - arrows are up. We'll rally over the other side of the dam to have more
friendly RV parking. We'll be going straight down 1334 across the dam - so
that's the plan now.
There's enough room there for a good number of RV's so it'll be more RV
friendly. Still pretty tight, but it's the best we got. I guess we'll just
have to see how many we have. The road going in should be fine for a big RV
(watch the overhang, though). It's wide enough, and I'm ASSUMING the area
by the dam is firm enough for the RV's. If it's rainy it'll be muddy.
If we don't have that many folks it'll be better at the main camp ground.
Plus there are a couple of camp places on the way - I stuck an arrow on a
tree by one of the camp areas to kinda 'mark' it.
Road 1331A with the silver gate goes to the main campground with the
outhouse. Not a lot of room there to turn around if we have RV's but it
does at least have primitive camping with fire rings and tables.
I put up orange/black Moose arrows along the way on Hwy 95 from I-40. I
arrowed the turn off at the base of the big hill for Jerusalem, and also at
Jerusalem for getting out to the camping area.
2/11/2006 update:
Deb Cook is going to have Chili for those
that are there on Friday night. Girard is going to have the fish fry on Saturday
and it sounds like Chris Blanco is going to have seafood gumbo on Saturday
night, too. Thanks in advance for the food, folks!
We'd like to ask you to bring your own plates, napkins and untensils to the
feeds, if possible. Of course, adult beverages for the cooks and lawn chairs are
still a good idea, as well.
On the sponsorship front, I haven't had great luck this year. Seems most of them
either want to work through a dealer or didn't respond to my requests. Jack
Bondhus from Road, Track and Trail in Minnesota has been working with Moose and
Pirelli so we'll have those to add to Smackover Motor Sports and Cycle Zone KTM.
Jack says he will also be donating a set of tires like last year to raffle for
the benefit of the club. So please buy some raffle tickets to help keep this
ride going. Much thanks to Jack for the tires and gathering some sponsors for
the ride.
We'd like to get a group photo or 2 at the ride this year. We're looking a the riders meeting on Fri/Sat and/or
the big feed Saturday. So wear your smile.
Here's an update from Jim:
Bob Diffee and I decided to have all the trails, except for the pee
wee loop, to begin at points off of Agar Loop (the road coming into
the campground from Camp Road).
That will leave the trails next to camp for the peewee loop riders,
with the adults only using the woods trails behind the campground
when coming in at the end of the A, B, & C loops (using them "one
way"). I figure it should cut down the chance of someone running down
a kid, or a head on collision while someone is doing a warm-up run
near camp.
The A & B Loops will start together, to the right (east) side of
Agar Loop. They will then split after they get over the top of Agar
Mountain, just where I split them last at year's ride.
They will come back together about 4 miles before they get back to
camp.
The C Loop will start to the left (west) side of Agar Loop, a bit
further on down (at the end of the clearcut, just before the start of
the sharp right hand curve, as Agar Loop goes over the mountain on
it's way back toward Camp Road).
We will lay out the peewee loop on Saturday.
End of Jim's update
I have not been able to get GPS coordinates for the main parking/camping area at Brock Creek.
Here's an update from Jonathon Wright about Brock Creek (he also looked at my maps here and
said they looked good to him but he'd try to confirm it this weekend):
Since camping is VERY limited, I'll also make arrows to other camping spots.
I'll see about putting up some pie plates as well. I may have to steer some
folks over to the motorcycle parking area.
There are camping areas on the way to the main camp ground, and primitive
areas near the lake below the main camping spot. Depends on how many folks
we are expecting. The area was not designed to accommodate 100
riders/camping rigs.
If we do go riding (before Wudi) I'll put up some directional arrows on some of the
trailheads if I can so that no one gets hit head on. That really worries me
when we get lots of folks out riding.
End of Jonathon's update
Big props to all the guys working to make this ride a great one and to the ADR for welcoming
us again this year. Make sure you get your orders into Jim ASAP if you want him to deliver
anything to the event for you.
I do not believe there are any hotels closer to the Brock Creek riding area than in Russelville. That should be about 45 minutes or so away from the parking area. I'm still trying to get GPS coordinates for the Brock Creek camp but the maps I posted may have to do for now.
Jim continues to add a LOT of detail about the ride in his recent updates in the forum link below. Look for the thread titled "2006 Wudi Winter Fun Ride / Wudi8".
Jim's Talking Smack "Ride Headquarters" forum. Some great details in there. Feel free to join up and add to or start your own threads.

Here's a page with maps and driving instructions.
The 8th annual Wudi ride is going to take place at the Train Robbers enduro trails near Hot Springs, Arkansas. See the links above for directions. The festivities will start center around the weekend of the 18th/19th of Feb this year. Jim says he plans on folks wanting to ride on Friday and possibly Monday. Much thanks to the Arkansas Dirt Riders (ADR) for letting us come back to ride the TR trails and prepping the trails! I plan to be there Friday.
These annual WUDI rides happen each year in February to let us northern types get some winter riding in. The only riding we get to do at that time of year is on snowmobiles up here in Minnesota. I moved to NW Arkansas this year from MN but Jim is keeping the tradition alive. It's only open to whomever, oops, that's all ya'lls who can come so it's not much of an invitational, actually. WUDI stands for WUDsracer Invitational. "Wudsracer" is Jim's user name on the rec.motorcycles.dirt usenet group, which is where I first got to "know" him. Please pass the word on. The more, the merrier.
These events started when Jim Cook extended an invitation to my Yankee self and friends to come down south and ride. He's since come to regret the offer but he's too much of a gentleman to turn the northeners down when they come begging each winter. It's grown from there into whatever it is now. This is NOT a full blown spodefest. I always try and round up some sponsors, too. Well, besides Jim who's been sponsoring this ride since '99. We did pretty well last year on sponsors and lots of folks got some nice swag.
Girard Lall has promised us a fish fry this year and it looks like gumbo will be served again, as well. They sure know how to cook down here!
Jim has offered to let us use his "Talking Smack" forum for the Wudi ride discussions.
Here's a link to his
board. Look in the Ride Headquarters forum. You'll have to get an
id if you don't already have one but it's free and easy to do.
Jim says the following about the TR trails:
"The Train Robbers trail is a combination of rocks and dirt. Not as
mountainous as Cass or Chadwick, but there are some real climbs. The
riding area is on the first real foothills of the Ouachita Mtns. I
would say to wear soft to intermediate tires. I will either use 756 or
S-12 tires. A M-12 front will work very well."
There is camping at the TR trailhead. Jim brought some fire barrels last year so hopefully we'll be able to use those again this year.
After the weekend at WRM, we'll move up to Brock Creek, AR, near Russelville, for a few days during the week. This
area is new to me so I'll have to get more details from Jim and add them.
Jim Cook, for those of you who don't know, owns Smackover Motorsports in scenic Smackover, Ark. Click on his name or picture above to link to his website. He sells GasGas dirtbikes. Jim can get you almost any part for whatever bike you ride for great prices. He's a great guy who will give you the shirt off his back.
You can still see the real Jim by clicking on his name from the spodelist. ;-)
On the other Wudi trips over the years to these areas, temps have been mostly from near freezing at night to 50/60+ during the day. We're due for a warm one so keep those fingers crossed. Altitude will be up to 3000' so no rejetting should be required. I've ridden both the TR robbers trails and they're a lot of fun, fun riding.
Email me, link at the bottom of the page, if you want to get on my e-mailing list for this event.
I talked to Jim at length about tubes and tires. He says:
I like the Kenda Unadilla/Milleville (same tire). I am selling these for
$40/front 21" and $50 for the rear. I've been using one of these on the front of my bike
for the last 4 months, and it has done very well. Some really like the rear tire,
and some do not. I like the Bridgestone M402 rear at the TR property, but it is a
"full priced" tire. I can do a three tire deal with Dunlops, with 1 front and two rears for $167
(100/100-18" rears), $172 (100/90-19" or 110/100-18), or $177 (110/90-19" rears)
You should run very heavy tubes in both tires. Moose Super Tubes are, in my opinion, great tubes and Jim does sell them. MSR Ultra Heavy tubes are a good choice, too. There would be no shipping charges on stuff you have Jim bring along for you and maybe no tax. You'd have to talk to him for specifics. Give him a call at 870-725-3966 to place your orders or click on his picture at the top of this page to go to his web site.
Jim also carries a full line of Moose/DP brake pads, barkbusters, lenses, goggles, roll-offs, and most anything that you could want for your bike. Just let him know what you want, ahead of time, if possible.
Post your questions and suggestions on the Smackover Bulletin Board that I linked to above.
